The Breaking of a Soul

a poem by Myra Sophia Dedekind

I see her lips move. The sound doesn’t reach me. I don’t want to hear. Not
now. Not ever.

‘Gerel.’

What a strange name. I’m sure it’s not mine.
You named me the moon. You gave me my shine.

‘Gerel.’

I refuse, shut my eyes, my ears, all my senses drowned out.
All that stays is darkness. My light has gone out.

‘Gerel, listen to me!’

Nothing is here, nothing is real. This a dream. There is nothing to fear.

‘Gerel, you have to stop.’

My sun is at home, she is safe and sound.
And when I return, my light will be found.

‘Gerel.’

You wouldn’t leave me. I won’t let you go.
Think of the baby, your upcoming show.

‘Gerel, she’s gone!’

The words sink in and I lose my hold.
Why?
